Common questions

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

A simple budgeting framework popularized by Senator Elizabeth Warren: 50% of after-tax income to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to savings and debt payments beyond minimums.

What counts as a "need"?

Things you genuinely can't avoid: housing, utilities, groceries, transport, minimum debt payments, insurance. Everything optional — dining out, streaming, travel — is a "want".

My rent is more than 50% — what now?

It's a target, not a law. If needs run high, cut wants temporarily and keep the 20% savings floor — or adjust the split to 60/20/20. The tool shows you the gap so you can decide consciously.
